Fort Wayne ITT Students Win National Design Award


As part of a senior level studio project in the bachelor degree program in Industrial Design at the ITT Technical Institute in Ft. Wayne, Tim Craig and Rebecca Mueller, click to see winners both residents of Ft. Wayne, collaborated on a design submission for the 3rd Annual Marine Design Resource Alliance (MDRA) designer scholarship program competition.

Their entry, named the "VUDU," click to see photo represented what they envision to be "a groundbreaking idea that allows the enthusiast to experience a new thrill in water sports." Craig and Mueller designed the "VUDU" with two large skis at the front of the hull so that the new boat would perform similar to a large snowmobile on water. The uniquely styled concept boat is loaded with creative features and boasts a front-mounted engine to keep the nose down and give the driver a better view of the water. The "VUDU" is projected to carry passengers at speeds over 50 miles per hour.

"Working with industry representatives through design competitions can help students develop the teamwork and problem-solving skills that are used in the work force after graduation," said Douglas Wintin, IDSA, Program Chair of Industrial Design.


The winning design will be displayed at the National Marine Manufacturer's Association Boat Building 2001 trade show, October 3-6, in Tampa, FL and at the International Boat Builder's Exhibition and Conference 2002 trade show, February 6-8, in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
