Cypress are coniferous evergreens with scale-like leaves which occur typically in 4 uniform rows. The cypress fruit is a globe-shaped cone, and the seeds are eaten by various bird species.

The Bald Cypress flourishes in marshlands and wetlands but is highly tolerant of a broad range of soil types and is drought resistant. The Bald Cypress is popular as a landscape tree and can reach a heigth of 100 ft.

Because of a very large taproot the signature cypress "knees", large root shaped forms at the bottom the trunk, develop when a tree grows near water in very wet soil.
